Seeing their daughter/son as an IAS is the dream of many a parents. The starting pay of a civil servant can be anywhere between Rs. 75,000/- to Rs. 1,20,000/- a month depending on the area and department of posting. Apart from that, a civil servant is entitled to generous perquisites like subsidized (yet grand!) housing, vehicle for official and personal uses, subsidized telephone/mobile, etc. But what takes the cake is the amazing bragging rights that you and your parents receive once you become a civil servant and the respect that you get in the society, which pushes many a young and bright people towards this career. There are many careers which can pay you more than what a civil services job does, but the social status that you receive here is unmatched in any other job, at least in India.
